Gar and Mar Jamaican American Cuisine

Great food, amazing friendly service, and an authentic menu! A group of us visited and had a variety of dishes. My personal favorite was the oxtail, but others liked the brown stew chicken, jerk chicken, curry goat, and salted fish! You should definitely get some fried dumplings on the side too.

Great hole in the wall. This place should be popping! They really need a mini stage where the TV is for karaoke. Cook in the back was loving life and the waitress was super friendly and enthusiastic about the business. The environment was super dope. Lots of American and Jamaican flags everywhere. Very authentic! Not a lot of places have that these days. I had the special goat curry and it was pretty darn good. If I lived here I'd go back to try other plates. They all sounded tasty. I also tried some of the oxtail and that was great too. Very tender, just like me. Ladies Holla at me!

HOLY. COW. Easily one of the BEST local meals I've had, and we have a lot of delicious restaurant options nearby! The curry is incredibly flavorful, the rice & peas are soft, fluffy, and spiced to perfection. Steamed cabbage is cooked to perfection, still just slightly crunchy. The fried okra is the best I've ever had, and I order fried okra at ANY restaurant where it's on the menu. The plantains are absolutely delicious, I will be ordering an extra side of them next time. Basically, I wish I had an unlimited budget and a bottomless stomach so I could order everything on the menu! As it is, I'll just have to keep coming back as often as possible until I've tried every dish. This place should be an absolute local staple, and if you're considering visiting, DO IT. You can't get there fast enough.

Although there is a long wait to get your food, it’s worth every minute. Everything was seasoned to perfection and the flavors complimented each other to make a heavenly dish! I had the jerk salmon meal. Highly recommend! Wish we lived in the area because this would be my new favorite spot.

Update Today, I tried a new dish at this great restaurant Cow feet, OMG , it is fabulous and very healthy. Also the goat plate was amazing. Love this place and this family owners. I love this family restaurant My sons said The chicken was great We tried the king fish, and red snapper was very good They have many hot and cold local Jamaican beverages. Mar and Gar, the owners, are very nice people I like this place

I ordered a large oxtail dinner, 6 jerk wings, mac and cheese, banana bread, and a lemonade. The oxtail dinner was very good. I find that the cabbage that comes with the meal at other places can oftentimes be bland, but not here. The whole meal was flavorful and absolutely delicious. I ordered extra crispy jerk wings but I had my husband pick them up for me and we live about 30 minutes away so they were soggy but it wasn't their fault. I HATE soggy wings and let me tell you...I scarfed these down lol They were so good! A perfect blend of sweet and spicy. I'd eat them again soggy or crispy! I'm keeping my review completely honest here, the mac and cheese was some of the worst I've ever had. It had zero flavor. It wasn't seasoned well, not even with salt. And the only reason I'm including a photo is because it's the only thing I had left to take a picture of lol I was really surprised it wasn't good, given the quality and seasoning of everything else. I'm not taking a star away though because I didn't go there for the mac and cheese. They were out of banana bread so they called and asked if I'd like corn bread instead and I was fine with that. The cornbread was very good. Wasn't dry at all. It was a huge piece! Would get it again. The lemonade was also very good! I will be ordering from here again and telling everyone about how amazing the food was!

Ordered door dash from here and I loved the food so much I had to come and leave a review. As soon as I walked in the place to pick up my food, I knew the food was going to be top notch authentic. It smelled so good in the restaurant! The jerk chicken was 5 stars by itself. It had a great smoky grilled flavor, you can tell they don’t cut corners on their food prep. The rice wasn’t too mushy or too hard. It was cooked just right with just the right amount of savory flavor. The oxtails were falling right off the bone and melt in your mouth type of good. 5 stars all around

The staff at this restaurant is very friendly! It looks clean. The atmosphere is lively and colorful. For some reason, the place was not busy on a Friday afternoon, so the service was quick. It is in the middle of downtown Berea, which is a beautiful college town, excellent for a walk after you are done eating.
